![]() Even wood, which is its natural complement, can’t survive without being nurtured by water. It can wash away earth it can put out fire it can wear a piece of metal down and sweep it away. Sayuri’s desire for free will and self-identity clashed with the traditions and customs of Japan in the early twentieth century. There’s no doubt it’s the most versatile of the five elements. Three of the most prominent themes of ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ are self-identity, tradition/customs, and free will. It changes shape and flows around things, and finds the secret paths no one else has thought about - the tiny hole through the roof or the bottom of the box. “I can see you have a great deal of water in your personality. If you bump, and tussle, and fight, and make use of whatever advantages you might have…” “All right, if it’s a stream, you’re still free to be in this part of it or that part, aren’t you? The water will divide again and again. Wood, on the other hand, holds fast to the earth.” “Water flows from place to place quickly and always finds a crack to spill through. Water can carve its way even through stone…and when trapped, water makes a new path…” “My mother always said my sister Satsu was like wood as rooted to the earth as a Sakura tree. All we can do is flow where the landscape of our lives carries us.” More quotes…. “Those of us with water in our personalities don’t pick where we’ll flow to. So, this photo above (taken in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota) I dedicate to the element of “water”, Nitta Sayuri and her journey, and “Memoirs Of A Geisha”. In light of this, the book is filled with the most beautiful and moving “water” quotes which have always stuck with me. One attribute for why Sayuri is able to overcome might be because she is said to have a lot of “water” in her personality. ![]() Through out her haunting story, she speaks with a wisdom of compassion and love and how she endures all of her hardships. It’s about a woman, Nitta Sayuri, who endures the worst conditions in her life from being sold into slavery at a very young age to becoming a Geisha. ![]() One of my favorite novels is “ Memoirs Of A Geisha“. ![]()
